  • Some people seem to have developed this one-sided, dogmatic view of comedy where elegance is the only aesthetic value, where jokes should have nothing superfluous and be delivered in the shortest possible form. They seem to believe this is universally accepted, but if it ever was it has now created its antipode, as aesthetic values tend to do. They then go around criticizing pieces of comedy for not being sterile, believing that their old-fashioned preferences are objective, even against direct evidence that audiences clearly appreciate the thing they are criticizing.
