Also got my next draft set up. This one is crazy long. To even fit it onto 2 papers I had to combine blocks of 20 turns that all turn in one direction into 5 lanes of 4 turns

Its based off of this belt Amleth is wearing in the Northman when he’s disguised as a Rus slave. This was the best screenshot I could get of the belt and though there are several articles on the historical costuming they did for production there were no tablet weaves to look at closely or patterns. So I had to eye it from a few pixels lmao.

Heres what the pattern looks like on the draft. I think I got it, this should look close to the final belt, gonna have to make it super long to get it to wrap around a persons waist twice with some long tail ends like Amleth has in the screenshot.

I made a real quick test strap to try out 3/1 twilling and man is that shit confusing. The smaller strap on top was my starting point, just a complete mess, but eventually I got it and started a new strap along the same warp anx it turned out great. Its a bit small, its only just fits around my head so its no belt, but it was good practice. and it was so small with only 10 cards that set up was way easier than normal. Started and finished it over the weekend which is the fastest Ive ever finished a project.

The back is also cool. You can see how the pattern reverses both in color and the direction the individual “blocks” of thread go, so the smooth 45° slopes become checkerboards that flow in the same direction as their front, but the triangles just flip color.

Stayed up way too late last night finishing this one, but it was worth it.

Having seen people write in Brandon for 2024 I’ve become convinced that that is conceptually the funnier option over writing in Hilldog (which was definitely the peak comedy option back in 2020) but that bastard still owes me 600 bucks so fuck him

I had to go in reverse and unweave like 5 whole turns and the weft was all tangled in random places. Shit was messed up. But I did it and now its beautiful again.

Itll be at least 1.5 meters long so itll probably be a belt. Everything I make is a belt, though I suppose you could cut one off early and sew it into a bracelet.

I am very pleasantly surprised lol. Its a bit of a complicated pattern so fucking up is easier but so far so good. I did seriously fuck up one time and I had to go in reverse to fix it yesterday which left a bit of a mess, but thats not visible in this pic.

This pattern actually would work a lot better with 6 hole cards, but I dont have those so I had to mess around with the draft a lot to get it to work in 4 hole.

The 4 hole has 4 spots where the card is turned 3 times to make the pattern work. Though on the actual belt the pattern looks a lot neater than on the draft.

I love it, its like knwoing a secret code. Ive actually been reading a bunch of tablet weaving theory from a book I illegally downloaded. I like finding finished belts and reverse engineering their patterns by eye.

This pattern I actually reverse engineered from a belt texture I found in ac valhalla just to see if it was real.

I had a dream once as a kid where I blew out a massive snot ball the size of my head and it felt amazing.

Well Im imitating Norse period tablet woven patterns, though Im unsure if they’d match any archeological finds exactly since Im not trying to be super period accurate. The tunic and leg wraps are Norse as well, but Im not well versed on the historical accuracy of their cut/style.

Tablet weaving itself has been around for much longer, back to at least the 800s bc afaik so its not specific to any one culture, but im definitely trying to emulate a viking style of dress.
