  • The recent seasons are . . . fine. They’re not terrible. I’m not a big fan of changing the voices out but obviously Fox (or Disney, now) will never let it die so we’ll have Simpsons for the rest of time.

HOWEVER. What it is now, is a pale shadow of it’s groundbreaking, culture-changing self that broke into mass consciousness with such wit and charm that fans can, and do, engage in entire conversations based solely on the show’s quotes and contexts.

Those first few years were stunning in the quality of humor they provided. The fact that it kept going - for years afterwards - was no less amazing. When it began to falter, people were not just annoyed or bored with it - they were alarmed.

Of course that in itself was a long time ago. All that’s over now. It’s just a glow in the rearview mirror for most of us, but I say unto thee - in all seriousness - it’s the cultural equivalent of Shakespeare and will be taught for generations.

The first 8 or so seasons, anyway. It’s not Batman.

  • hehe. Agree Ubuntu is probably your best bet for ease of install and getting up to mischief quickly.

OpenSUSE is not for beginners. Neither is Gentoo. Nor Slax. I mean - don’t let that stop you - but I tried all three recently and . . . it was more frustrating than fun. They’re powerful, yes, and I know some old heads that won’t go near anything else. But for beginners? Noooooo.

Edit: Sorry, OpenSUSE is probably fine, they didn’t have a 32bit version so I didn’t try it. Also, elementary os 8 is pretty slick. And PopOS. Both have very easy install & setup wizards.

  • Oh man, I feel that pain. But here’s where I’m at: after so many decades of really trying, really trying to get them to learn what a file system is and how computers, y’know, work, I’m done.

Obviously I don’t do that work for pay, but when I did I went with the assumption that people were just ignorant, not stupid. Now I think they’re just incurious - which is a kind of stupidity. And since the vast majority of their lives are now controlled, monitored, or involve these systems they can’t be bothered to learn - yeah, sucks to be them.
