I’ve been pushing positivity since the beginning before the first 1.5k joined this server. https://lemmy.world/post/36032

I would do it, and have the time, but I don’t think you guys meet my requirements to make it manageable. I don’t use proprietary software, and use a whitelist firewall with addresses I know and trust, like this server. While I can spin up a secondary network or even a Windows machine, I do not care to do so at all, and certainly not regularly. However, I’m basically at a computer all the time anyways.

  • What do you think it would take to make this vote tally thing automated by a bot? Like ideally one could set up the whole thing to tally, send a few direct messages around and fall back to defaults if there is no reply set within a given amount of time. I’m not criticising anyone here. From my perspective after hosting once, the whole tally and generation of the next challenge is a bit of a drag where automaton and routine would help improve participation IMO.

  • Invisibly; by trying to post in it and encourage others to do so. There is not much management to do with such a small community. The majority of regular users watch the All feed, so subscriptions are really just a way to bookmark the community to post in it or find it more easily. For smaller or new communities, expect it to be more like your personal blog as it is unlikely to be something others will post in regularly. The majority of communities that are hourly-active were made prior to the rexodus of June 2023, or within a few weeks thereafter.

Unless you’re in a very controversial space, actively micromanaging a community is likely an issue with the mod not the community IMO. The admins take care of the majority of wack-a-mole nonsense here.

  • How are finishes so durable and thin?

My assumption of a lack of post processes is because I come from a background of automotive refinishing and repair, where I’ve owned a shop and painted for many years along with getting into custom art graphics and airbrushing. The only finishes I know of that provide a similar durability are two part urethanes. Those are far too thick by comparison. When cutting into plastics that have been moulded, the finish shows no signs of mechanical layering or bonding like a post process finish in most cases. Often a cleanly broken or cut part shows a similar type of penetrating surface alteration I associate with a polishing operation, where the surface transitions in color and grain structure with in millimeter or few (in cases where the break is clean and does not appear to be influenced by stress alterations like ABS where it whitens under tension).

How does chromate conversion work with a prep regime and what kind of wet paint can offer similar durability to a 2k urethane when it is impossibly thin? Like I know the limitations of urethane well when it comes to corners and pointy bits where it will thin from surface tension. There is not a chance in hell that the buttons on the side of my phone could be painted with such a finish with an even conformal coating and remain durable for years of constant abrasion. Is there a name for this class and type of finish? Where are they sourced? What is the scale of the industry? Is there a way to access the process and products at a small scale?

  • I’m using principles of 'close enough. I almost exclusively use the Part Design WB.

Technically I should probably model this in Blender. I know Blender has a way to wrap and unwrap like I hinted. This post was really a fishing attempt to see if anyone here knew of a way to do the same thing in freecad.

To model this, the first trick is to pick the best origin point. I’m using the screw pivots where the arms fold to hold my X-axis. The inside face of the lens is 146.6mm in diameter and is my primary reference surface for the lens. The shape of the lens is all done by creating sets of 2 sketches that are only used for references. These references are only used to attach a datum plane. The datum planes hold the sketches that pad and pocket the solid shape.

If I really wanted to make this better I could do so by making more complex sweeps while only building the part with reference to the outside face of the lens, because it is not a perfectly circular dimension. After the surface features are complete for this face, I could use the defeaturing add-on workbench to extract just the outside face from the PD body. With this face by itself, I could create a filled offset in the Part workbench. Then I would be able to cut the circular inside diameter from the X/Y axis to rebuild the 146.6 mm inner face.

In my experience that tree would have around a 50/50 chance of failing if I tried it. The task would cone down to how well the offset in the Part workbench is calculated. Even with this entire setup, I would not be able to control things like a varied edge finish on different parts of the lens so that I could model the mechanical properties better. I’m not super worried about the surface in freecad because I will need to sand and polish the print anyways.

Thanks though. Hopefully you can follow the explanation. When I started with freecad years ago, I might have tried something like the draft WB but almost everything belongs in a Part Design workflow. It is simply a matter of knowing how to pick good references, setting your origin well, avoiding referencing off of π as much as possible, and NEVER importing edges or points from 3d geometry.

  • They told us they were going to invest in EV R&D back in 2014. You know, back before we had that orange anal experience of a Russian puppet wannabe pornstar felon president. We put 6b into GM to compete; they pumped their stocks with it. Such is 3rd world America. Lay off the McCarthy bullshit whining about investing in R&D to mask corruption and ineptitude. This was no fucking surprise. Spinning this bullshit is just trying to justify screwing over average Americans with overpriced undeveloped bloated unaffordable garbage made to pad our useless incompetent oligarchy’s pockets.

  • None of them have. Like the Trinity was invented at the first ecumenical council of Nicaea over 300 years after the stories of the gospels. The word and concept have no biblical basis whatsoever. So even back before the biblical canon was finalized they weren’t reading it and made it up as they went.

  • See this is why I like to talk and ask this kind of thing. I agree with you and your perspective. I mentioned it because I really don’t know how I feel on the subject. I speak to my hesitation; not from my actionable stance.

I still struggle with the idea of validating stupidity and the long term implications that will cause in the future. Like monarchy, under the right person and circumstances is great. The problem is that it is impossible to deal with the succession crisis successfully as history has proven. Equality only works when it is kept in balance with a meritocracy to some extent, lest we elect a government full of mental health patients in the name of equality. On the level of nature itself, we are not actually equal. Our relative differences are usually minor, but we are not all leaders in a respective academic field. Are there positive outcomes that result from placing people of dubious capability in charge of such things?

Like ages ago I had a car break down in the middle of New Mexico on an Indian reservation. People were super nice and helpful, but that place was in terrible shape. I can’t help but think they would be far better off if they had much better opportunities that bridged the past and present. Something like free rides in education and tax breaks for employers that hire Native Americans.

I still feel like placing feelings above fundamental logic skills is a path with no future. I don’t believe in giving a flat earther a seat at a science conference. Do you?

Gov. Gavin Newsom has set in motion the largest land return in California history, declaring his support for the return of ancestral lands to the Shasta Indian Nation that were seized a century ago and submerged. The 2,800 acres in Siskiyou County are part of the Klamath River dam removal project, which will rehabilitate more than 300 miles of salmon habitat. “This is a down payment on the state’s commitment to do better by the Native American communities who have called this land home since time immemorial,” Newsom said in a statement. The governor’s announcement Tuesday marked the fifth anniversary of California’s official apology to its Native American peoples for the state’s historical wrongdoings.

AITA for feeling torn between justice for mistreated people, a desire for diversity, but also a dislike for spiritism of any sort albeit Abrahamic or otherwise? Don’t be an A for someone asking a tough question and trying to nav their biases.

I would probably react negatively, without thinking a few years ago if I saw someone ask this question, so I totally understand the tendency to do so. My question is based on two situations. The telescopes on Mauna Kea in Hawaii and resistance to them, and watching Nick Zentner’s geology YT uploads where he tries to include some natives and their perspectives. I wanted so bad to see value in what they had to add, like the potential for their oral history to have some missing value overlooked by science, or some narrative like that, but it was always like watching a toddler tell the most cringe stories. Like I expected some kind of consistency in stories like, ‘this is how we tell the stories and how we remember them.’ However, instead it was like everything I disliked about growing up in conservative Christian cult like extremism. Every question asked had an answer off the cuff. Not some kind of rehearsed thing they knew, but like a child making it up as they went. The focus was not factual or an alternate useful approach. It came across to me as someone that desperately wanted validation of ineptitude.

I’ll readily admit I have a strong prejudice against spiritism. I really want to support righting injustices for people. I’ve experienced the injustice of having my life all but taken from me at the hands of a stranger driving a car poorly. I totally get behind that part. I don’t expect people to integrate into religious culture, but I do expect people to modernize when advancement is shown. Like if the mountains near my house are a world class opportunity to advance human understanding, I don’t care about the bullshit rituals some church did up there in the past or what my idiot family did for generations. I appreciate the opportunity to advance all of humanity’s knowledge and future. I have a hard time feeling empathy for anyone that feels otherwise, like they are little more than an anarchic regressive force. Feel free to make a counter point in a productive way, but know that I walk away from rude or negative people just like in the real world. So I’ll delete this if people downvote because they can’t handle real conversations or controversy without being a negative person.
