  • Yeah, I’m not religious anymore, but in college I led a homeless outreach team for Christian students where we’d go downtown every week to provide food and friendship to the unhoused. The single most regularly attending person was sikh. The fact that she joined even though it was a different religion (we’d pray before and after the night) spoke volumes to me, and it made me respect the religion a lot. In fact, the thought that someone like her would technically not go to heaven simply due to believing in a different religion was one of the reasons why I stopped practicing.

I’ve always been taught that “good” Christians convert others by being so kind and generous that others ask “what drives them to be like that?” And that’s the proper way to proselytize. None of this preaching, damnation and hellfire stuff. Be a good and inspirational enough person that others will naturally be drawn to what drives you. It’s a shame that the loudest voices get the most attention.

  • Multiple people are calling out that the mine planet wasn’t at 80% liberation while the child planet was at 45% - are you sure you didn’t check another planet by accident, or otherwise mix up your numbers?

If you just take a look at the memes the community made you’ll see that they’re all focused on Helldivers saving the kids, which is further evidence that you might’ve gotten the numbers wrong.

EDIT: I haven’t used this website before, but this dashboard shows that marfark was at 0% liberation until yesterday. I’m pretty sure you’ve gotten your numbers wrong initially. I think when you checked and the planet had 74k players, the liberation had RISEN to 39%, which is supported by the dashboard plot of marfarks liberationb& the timestamp of 2024-06-15T02:45:04Z shows 76k active players and around 40% liberation, steadily rising up from 0 before.

  • Bruh it’s not an assumption (required for a loaded question) to say that reasoning about the future in the case of a democratic win is speculation just like reasoning about the future in the case of a Republican win is.

That is 100% a fact. Once again, the guy you’re defending has arrived at the same conclusion:

but the part about the DNC does indeed fall into the realm of speculation.

The whole point of my comment is that speculation about the effects of a democratic win were initially portrayed as ironclad, while the speculation of the effects of a Republican win were downplayed due to being speculation. I’m not commenting on the message, I’m commenting on the delivery. You’re commenting on the message, not the delivery. Your comments are simply not relevant to mine.

When the guy you’re “defending” and I are in agreement, what are you doing? Are you going to explain what they “really” meant with their comment?

You still haven’t answered my question.

Are the results of a democratic victory as much speculation as the results of a Republican victory?

The original comment was able to discuss the results of a democratic victory with laser precision, while it danced around the potential effects of a trump victory by calling it speculation. Again, see what I quoted.

I’ve seen this disparity in foresight multiple times on Lemmy, and it’s frustrating when used to justify decision-making. It’s literally the sleeping Shaq meme.

FWIW, OP and I are actually in agreement, both in that democratic victory outcomes are also speculation (and should’ve been worded as such) as well as the point being made.
