  • I was taught to type that way, but I was never that good at using my right pinky while typing a letter with my left. Or maybe I just wasn’t good at coordinating which shift key to use with which letter. So I started just always using the left shift key which I somehow never had a problem with.

If I have to type capital A, left pinky holds shift and ring finger hits the A. This isn’t the “right” way to touch type, but I can still type pretty fast.

  • We hard disagree on that last point. Some people can’t move for various reasons.

I grew up without a phone, so I get the benefits of learning to be independent. I also got myself a Google voice number at a young age so I wouldn’t be left out of friend groups because of not having a phone. It really is ostracizing, and back then it wasn’t as bad as it is today.

I also think the safety concerns are way overblown and what some parents really want is to know their kids’ locations at all times and be able to talk to them at all times. I’m not a parent so I can’t judge, but that’s not how I grew up, and I’m not sure it’s good for kids or parents to be that connected.

  • I’m a fan of 404media’s model, which does have ads, but gets most of its funding through subscribers. All their news journalism is free (behind a login page), but they have premium content like behind the scenes blogs and an expanded podcast for subscribers only.

I get that the only reason they can do this is because

    1. They benefitted from traditional media organizations to grow their skills and contacts before striking out on their own.
    2. They run a lean organization and have a limited “beat”.
    3. They encourage a parasocial relationship with their readers through the free podcast, etc. (not necessarily a bad thing).

But it is an interesting model. I’d subscribe if I could afford it. And maybe someday I will.
