  • Women hit puberty a lot sooner than men. My parents didn’t tell me anything about periods or puberty because they were religious and didn’t want to talk about it. Luckily, my school gave me sex ed the year of my first period while I was still in elementary school at age 10, so I wasn’t freaked out when I had my period and knew I needed a pad. Girls have been getting their periods even more early than that nowadays. Sex ed isn’t about just having sex or what sex is, it’s about your body and how it is developing. Then once I hit high school I was given more in depth sex ed about how to be safe, types of birth control, the menstrual cycle (which was already covered in elementary school but a good refresher), and other health topics like mental health.

  • You haven’t seen how Facebook is then, people with their pictures and real names shown still being very toxic, especially with the laugh emoji. I prefer anonymity, otherwise I would just find a different platform. I don’t feel bad for downvoting people, but I would feel bad if someone could go through my profile and take things out of context and further invade my privacy. At least with my words, I can explain myself. But how do you know why I downvoted something? It already felt creepy when people in reddit would dig through your history several months back to try to find something that would tarnish your character so they could “win” an argument. You want to make that worse? I’m not ok with the way Meta handles broadcasting everything you have ever liked or reacted to. I won’t compromise my privacy just so some people feel safer engaging, thinking there is accountability when it just makes it easier to harvest personal data from you.

  • I didn’t like the filter. I shouldn’t have to submit a photo of my arm to “prove” I am mixed with black, my skin tone also isn’t dark so I might as well be lying. I never participated because of the filter, it brings up painful memories surrounding my heritage and skin tone and childhood. I think it’s an odd choice to prevent most of reddit from commenting and preserve a safe place. I get that it cut down on racists, still don’t feel comfortable about it. I don’t know what other tests they put people through, the photo test was the one talked about a lot.

There is an ally flair I remember seeing but I don’t want it. I don’t want a label because if I say I’m mostly Latino, I’ve had people tell me that makes me white and not a POC and will never know what racism is and I get basically shut out. But also I’ve had people, even family members, be racist to me about being mixed with black. I guess I don’t belong in the conversation.

I’ve also had run ins with some of the black power mods, yellow rose, and she expressed not wanting me to participate at all because I believe while white people can’t be systematically oppressed the same way in America, you can still be racist to them. She runs the main sub about racism on reddit, they only talk about white supremacy because that’s the only type of racism in their minds. It makes me just not want to talk about my experiences because they aren’t valid. I will never be black enough or white enough or Latino enough.

  • I didn’t post a lot but I was definitely anxious about commenting because if it wasn’t worded just right, someone would take it out of context and be offended by it or downvote it to hell. I remember telling someone that I loved their poems - downvoted. I corrected someone about the difference between ESAs and service dogs - cue arguments when they can just literally read the ADA (law). I apologized for getting something wrong - insults and talked down to. I also remember being told that latinx is what trans Latinos want people to use, I used it and was greatly talked down to and told I’m not a real Latino. It felt like reddit was just really hostile no matter what I did. There were many times I wrote a comment but then discarded it.

  • I guess I’m frustrated with the communities that decided to chose beehaw really, some of the big subs announced they would now be moderating a replacement community on beehaw. It makes me want to shake them and ask why the fuck did they pick beehaw. If beehaw wants to become a great firewall, whatever it only makes me never want an account on there because I want to choose which instances to interact with, not the admins. But now I would have to find new communities to replace the ones taken away by beehaw admins. Any communities I have created can’t be interacted by beehaw users and I can’t interact with any communities on beehaw. I’ve already read a comment about a person from beehaw who now can’t continue to mod a community on lemmy.world. The nuke action was not appropriate imo. The beehaw admins also refuse to delegate, they only want 4 people to comb through every single post and comment. This is insane for 4 people to do.

I also don’t see this as a temporary measure, they want the lemmy devs to implement the exact mod tools they want otherwise they won’t unblock my instance. I find that unlikely to happen any time soon, if ever, due to how open source projects work. Might as well as have told everyone it is permanent and they don’t care instead of giving a bs reason. Why would I bother making an account on a different server at this point when that server can easily be the next one beehaw blocks? At what point does beehaw decide to just defederate because they can’t handle interacting with other instances? I have taken the news very poorly and have nothing but disdain for the admins there.

  • Lol every time I read an announcement by these guys it feels off-putting. I thought I was a progressive but reading this and the comments makes me feel like I am the furthest thing from progressive if this is what they believe. Every time they mention a safe space, I wonder if they are trying to make safe spaces seem like a joke because that’s the vibe I’m getting. Safe spaces are for victims, not for trying to create a great wall of beehaw “ideals.”

It sounds like they micro-manage too much, they’re complaining about having to moderate thousands of posts and their comments while trying to keep their server up. They should instead have moderators of each community be in charge of their own community and only if a community is reported to be doing what they don’t want (rampant hate speech) then they can … ban them? I actually don’t know how it works on lemmy. But that sounds better than the server owner trying to control everything. I’ve only run into lemmy.grad talking about communism once, didn’t care for the discussion so moved along. And one person talking about trans people and detrimental effects of hormone blockers (judging by the other comments, this person was banned). Besides that lemmy seems left leaning. This long rant idk rubs me the wrong way. Taking too long to get to their point.
