Things that paint the US in a negative light tend to be glossed over in US schools - at least, they were when I was in it ages ago. Can’t imagine that’s changed much.

Now, maybe your school and/or teacher sucked and tried to cram it into their one hour coverage of Vietnam, but it was in there, I promise. (Unless you went to a religious school, then I’ll believe any claim you make but note that it isn’t typical)
