UPDATE

Since the pre orders for Sea of Thieves went live earlier today the listing on the PlayStation Store has been updated to increase the price of all three versions.

The new prices are…

Standard Edition £32.99 to £39.99
Deluxe Edition £39.99 to £49.99
Premium Edition £49.99 to £59.99

If you pre ordered at the lower price some people have reportedly had their orders cancelled and refunded and now have to pre order again at the new higher price.

I was quite content to pay £49.99 for the Premium Edition but I think £59.99 may be too much for a 6 year old game that also requires a PS Plus subscription to play.

As a rule I don’t recommend preordering games however in this case where the game is almost 6 years old there’s more than enough information about the game out there to feel safe in preordering on this occasion.

In case you missed it Sea of Thieves is one of 4 Xbox First Party games being tested on PlayStation. The others being Pentiment, Hi-Fi RUSH and Grounded. If these do well I would expect more older Xbox Games Studios games to make the jump to PlayStation.

Some cosmetic stuff and early access to the closed beta.

But no matter the reward, a preorder is never worth it

Most of the time I’d agree and actively try and discourage people from pre-ordering.

But in the case of a game that came out 6 years ago there’s no risk as you know exactly what you’re getting.

The PlayStation port could still be broken on release due to bugs specific to that production pipeline. Or the servers aren’t scaling correctly with the amount of players.

It doesn’t matter whether you know what you’re getting. Shelling out money long before you receive your product (or in this case, the license to play the software on your proprietary hardware device) is like a reverse savings account.

Even on day one Sea of Thieves didn’t have server issues which is rare for an online only game.

But your other point about the port is a worry but Rare aren’t handling the PS5 port. A dev with PlayStation experience is so hopefully it will be ok.

I haven’t pre ordered yet though because the last 3 games I pre ordered have been disappointments and I think that’s what’s stopping me here.
