And here we go again. Capcom pulled this crap with Dragon’s Dogma and now Namco is too?

What ever happened to trying to deliver a quality game with good value? Now everyone just wants to monetize everything at a time when everyones struggling due to inflation and the aftermath of the covid quarantines.

Capcom did it with Street Fighter 6, too. From the competitive player’s perspective though, these battle passes have been totally irrelevant, since they have more to do with avatars than they do with playable characters.

Play indie games that have exactly what you’re asking for or admit that you’re willing to compromise to get a AAA title.

      Hope this helps.

Like the other person said, you have plenty of options, especially if you’re willing to include platform fighters like Rivals of Aether 1&2 and Slap City. Skullgirls is legit if you don’t mind your female characters “breasting boobily”.

Thanks for the recs! Slap City looks very SSB so I’m in.

Also as someone who grew up playing SoulCalibur as the only fighting game in the house, I have become so numb to video game characters “breasting boobily” it’s a bit alarming…

Yeah smash bros brawl was my childhood game. If you like how slap city looks you could check out Fraymakers too, that one’s in alpha right now but it looks promising.

If I had the time, patience, and network to learn a new fighting game it’d probably be the newest Guilty Gear though. Breaking someone’s neck with a coffin-flail looks like so much fun.

I actually got into Strive over the pandemic, and that’s what started my interest into new types of fighting games. I really enjoyed the character designs and game mechanics, and the online community doesn’t feel too toxic for a fighting game. I would recommend it if you ever have the time!

I’m not much af a fighting game person but I would second skullgirls just for the art/music design alone. It has a charm that I really liked.

Melty Blood might count. Does UNIB count? Skullgirls and Fighting Herds? There are a couple.

Thanks for the list! I’ll check them out on Steam and hopefully the “recommended for you” algo does the rest. A couple of my friends already own Under Night, so I might start there.

Because so far they keep making games, while appealing, focus so heavily on monetization that I can’t get myself to become interested in them

Most of the action rpgs I’ve seen in the last five-ish years have play-to-get-ahead dlc’s. I was going to recommend a monster hunter game but they have “guardian armor” that lets you skip the first five-ish hours of progression.

It really sucks, and I get it. But talking about it with strangers on the internet will not make anyone feel better. I recommend just playing the dang game if it’s that enticing. I’ll probably play dragons dogma 2 in a couple years when mods will let you cheat in the dlc items for free.

I’d be alright with the battle pass if DLC characters became free instead. As it is right now, they are quadruple dipping on game sales, mtx store, battlepass and dlc.

They can still add lootboxes. The enshittyfication never ends, or whatever it is called.
