Connect for Lemmy can also block by instance. Cleared all the porn out of my feed in a couple taps, it’s great.

I hate this logic. If we aren’t supposed to defederate, then we shouldn’t have the option. It is a core feature of the fediverse. It can and should be used.

All of y’all who talk like this need to go back to Reddit. This is not Reddit. We need to use the tools available to us to keep out bad actors. Build up your own instance if you want to let every asshole through the door.

The Lemm.ee admin talked about it here

TL;DR: This instance wants to federate with everyone as much as possible. You can block hexbear communities if you’d like.

I have like 60 communities blocked by now but it feels nice to make my own choices.

Many people are very triggered in that post and I don’t get it.

No platform is gonna have only decent users and only content you agree with. Resorting to defederation from any instance that is offensive to some people just damages what lemmy is trying to be tbh.

Eventually instances following that mindset will be isolated because there’s always someone out there who wants to impose their own content curation (like no NSFW, no politics, no trolling, no memes, etc…)

Users should make the calls for what they want to see on an individual level. Thanks to the admin for sticking to fair policies.

I am watching instances on the fediverse once again fall into the trappings of giving too much benefit of the doubt/giving too much commitment to some flawed notion of “free speech” and all I can think about is how that is 90% of what ruins any quality community that starts gaining traction online.

If this is the road we’re going down we may as well leave now. I’m tired of seeing this happen over and over again.

Admins: y’all need to be more liberal with the ban hammer. You also need to defederate from communities that are so blatantly toxic and fucked up. There are enough people out there now that we don’t need to be hanging out with literally any person who expresses interest in the fediverse. It’s time to exercise a little bit of discernment. Your generosity will be used against you like a cudgel. Make no mistake.

      Defederate. It’s the right call.

They’re absolutely harmless, and I don’t understand the recent hubbub. Their culture is a bit strange, but they mostly seem to just want to shitpost about politics in peace. They won’t bother you unless you say “defederate hexbear” 3 times in a mirror, and then they swarm, I think just wanting hugs or something.

Just because they speak a different language, doesn’t to me feel like a reason to defederate. They also seem to be fairly self-policing.

For instance they like to perform what they call “dunking” which I believe originates from a collective idolization of Michael Jordan.

However, they keep posting reminders to one another to not bring the “pig poop balls” to other instances, as to not offend outsiders. They use the acronym PPB, and I think it has something to do with a lack of fecal hygiene being a large spreader of disease.

We’re one of the oldest and by far most established and active community on the lemmyverse. Our instance was forked for a long time because of some backend issues with how our admins wanted pronouns to work on our usernames for example. Just last week we finished updating the site such that we’re compatible again and merged. OP is big mad that we’re very populated and active so it feels like we’re ‘brigading’ when a thread gets popular. It could also be that we’re militantly pro-lgbt (if the pronouns didn’t tip you off) and ideologically leftist (usually marxist-lenninists but we have a fair number of anarchist comrades as well).

We’re kind of having a laugh at all these people who joined 1-2 months ago from reddit having culture shock at the new site and demand the furniture be arranged to their taste. It could also be as one of us mentioned on a separate thread that OP was doing some casual homophobia and boy do we like bullying people like them. If you sort your lemmy feed by all and sort by active, you’ll see posts with hundreds of comments where we’re arguing about bigotry like that, disinformation, western chauvinism, ect.

The community was originally on Reddit as /r/chapotraphouse until we along with most other explicitly leftist subs were banned. We’ve been here for three years ever since. hexbear-logo

This comment section is a prime example. They brigade every single post about China/Russia or about them, and if you find one there are ten others there as well. If you think lemmygrad is bad, hexbear is way worse.

The above users in this thread are posting (and then re-posting) soviet symbolism (and apparently calling me a Nazi for removing said content). I am banning the second user, as they are clearly aware that they are re-posting removed content.

Not sure if I actually have to justify removing soviet and/or nazi symbolism, but I have lived my whole life in a country on the border of Russia. My country been ravaged by both Nazis and Soviets in very recent history. I want to be clear that while I think criticising capitalism is totally normal and necessary, I am also extremely aware of constant Kremlin propaganda. Propaganda which is spread both in their media, but also crucially in online channels. Propaganda which includes things like downplaying horrifying actions of the soviet union, portraying their “enemies” (the west) in the worst possible light, and mixing in soviet symbolism wherever possible. I have no intention of allowing anything which resembles this propaganda to be spread through lemm.ee. If banning offending users does not work, then further steps will definitely be taken.

To the Hexbear users who are in this thread: I’m not sure what your goals are, but I’m sure you realize that this is the meta community of another instance, not some meme community. Are you trying to make your instance look bad? I see very few good faith posts from you guys here.

Equating Nazi symbolism with Soviet ones just feels like such a weird thing to do, there’s a reason Nazi symbols are banned in several (if not a majority) of European countries, but is not the case at all when it comes to soviet symbols. I think it’s specially disappointing because the image that was originally shared was a reference to the “spectre” line in the communist manifesto. The hammer and sickle symbol has a long history that supersedes the history of the Soviet Union as a state, even my “third-world country” in Latin America (I’m sure you can see in the logs where I’m posting from) has a history of using the symbol for liberatory causes.

That’s a very important point, thanks for the comment. For me, such symbolism immediately associates with people glorifying the soviet union, but I understand that there can be lots of people out there who don’t associate it with Russia at all.

I have no trouble distinguishing them based on what kind of concentration camps they ran. I assure you that “the soviets occupied your country for 50 years, but it’s ok because they initially fought the other guys who occupied you” is not as good of a “gotcha” as you believe.

I take your words to mean that I should be grateful that the soviets only replaced 20% of the population in my country, because the germans were planning to replace 50% (according to Generalplan Ost). To some, it may be an interesting philosophical debate whether evil can be measured in population replacement percentages, or whether we should try to measure evil like this at all. Believe me that what you’re saying is nothing new to me (or to any Estonian who has ever discussed this subject with any non-Estonian). It’s a debate I have heard hundreds of times throughout my life, and it’s not one I wish to participate in again right now.

By the way, what you’re saying is also a very common Kremlin talking point when it comes to the soviet occupation of my country - trying to direct the conversation to how horrible to Nazis would have been, so “surely the actions of the Soviets were justified in that context”.

The thing is though, most people do distinguish them quite heavily. The hammer and sickle is still frequently used as an international symbol of worker’s liberation while the swastika, black sun, etc are firmly attached to one of the greatest atrocities in human history. To compare them as equals, even without their direct relation in history, is extremely strange and something that only fascists would typically do in an effort to downplay the holocaust

We were thankfully able to turn things around after the (relatively recent) collapse of the soviet union. We were able to join both NATO and the EU, and while quality of life has not fully caught up to the nordics, I have been able to witness a constant improvement since my childhood.

You kinda do have to justify it because it’s not normal to equate nazi and Soviet symbols. That’s not something an average user would anticipate to encounter from an instance. It should definitely at least be explicitly spelled out to users when they sign up or view content from here.
