In an op-ed in The New York Times, Dr. Vivek Murthy said immediate action is needed to protect young people from the potential mental health harms of social media.

great idea genius. “do not eat the forbidden fruit” has worked soooo well from the beginning of time until now. social media is a problem, but it’s rooted in the same instinct that makes teenage fucking a problem–no one’s going to “solve” it. best you can do is educate and hope for the best–too bad so many people are hellfuckingbent on dismantling education altogether

That’s literally what he’s proposing. Warning labels are literally designed to provide information to consumers.

Smoking rates have been cut by over 75% from their peak in the 70s

i’m glad you also think a warning label on instatwitbooktok is going to accomplish anything. i guess we can look forward to no more social media addiction/bullying/suicides soon

The point is to reduce these things, not eliminate them. Your cynicism is misguided given the very real example where this already worked.

ok. the urge to smoke cigarettes is not something all humans develop as they age, the way we develop the psychological need to “belong” and be popular with the in-crowd. but yea, keep thinking the solution to the cigarette problem will also be the solution to the 100% unrelated social problem

lol are you trying to say that the basic knowledge that humans (primates, really) have an inherent urge to be included and well regarded by their peers is wrong? the perceived lack of which is causing all these social media problems in the first place? or are you just saying i’m wrong because i said something?
