196 stems from a different subreddit called 195, had something to do with a university or some shit, it closed down and 196 was created, the only rule is to post something before you leave. I.e. It’s a meme dumping ground. You’ll find it to be generally lgbtq+ friendly too.
The number was someone’s dorm room, and that’s why there was 197 and other spinoffs. What made each one unique was their slant and I think 196 was known for being trans-positive while some of the other ones tended towards dark and crass humor. I think there was an alt-right one because of course there was. 🙄
