[Half Life 3 (HL3) doesn’t count as we already know that game is still a long way off from coming out. Like another 5 or more years.]
My relatively obscure and hopeless choice is Golden Sun 4
Ooh I have another one! Steamland, the game of my childhood. RTS with trains. Would be very cool if it had a sequel.
Portal, please
Honestly every valve IP
Maybe not tf3 though, perhaps instead if it was a complete rewrite of tf2 and engine port that fixed all the jank
Portal
I wanted to see KOTOR 3 for years, but after seeing the writing in TOR and knowing Disney has bought the IP, I don’t expect it, and I wouldn’t be super excited if they actually make it.
SWTOR is as close as we are ever gonna get. Even if it’s not quite the same thing. At least the base game story wise is solid and free!
Just turn the chat off and pretend everyone running around is a NPC. 😂
F-Zero
Before the release of DA veilguard, my answer would be Mass Effect 4. Now I’m not so sure.
Titanfall 3. I’m doubtful it’ll happen as long as Apex Legends and/or the Cal Kestis Jedi series is profitable, and if it does come it’ll be riddled with microtransactions in the multiplayer but honestly if we get some new evolution in the waltz between titans and pilots I’d still dig into the multiplayer for at least a few hundred hours. With the new server-side tech I imagine if they tuned the graphics to a more cartoonish style, they could 100% create a Titanfall-Battlefield crossover game with massive maps and plenty of environmental destruction that would be unbelievably fun and intense. Not to mention TF2’s campaign is in need of a follow-up.
In the same vein I’d love to see a direct sequel to Red Faction Guerilla. I’m not sure what caused it but it seems like AAA studios have shied away from destructible environments in a stupidly disappointing way. Rainbow 6: Siege is the only modern game with a seeming dedication to unscripted destruction; even Battlefield 2042 notably lacks it. RFG had some unbelievably fun mechanics when it came to the mixture of open world and destruction. Not to mention the themes in that game’s story would resonate well with most people nowadays.
No One Lives Forever
But as the games are in rights hell this will never happen.
A proper new Thief would also be nice. By someone who actually wants to make it maybe this time.
It’s been so long since I’ve played these. I need to replay them.
If you want Half Life 3, go play the Entropy Zero mods. It’s fanon, but they actually respect the franchise. Think of it as HL2’s own Opposing Forces. The first one is good, but the second is better in every regard.
What I’m looking forward to the most right now is whatever the next installment of Entropy Zero will be. There’s some spinoff stuff and a proper sequel in the works.
I’m also interested in Project Borealis, but that’s untested for the moment.
Elder scrolls. It’s been how long since the announcement of a coastline?
If it’s not out within the next 4 years, it will officially be the case that more time has passed between Elder Scrolls 5 and 6 than Elder Scrolls 1 through 5.
17 years between Arena and Skyrim compared to 13 years so far since Skyrim’s release in 2011 (and counting, almost up to 14 years if counting from calendar year alone).
When Skyrim came out, Bethesda promised free new Bethesda games for life to parents of kids born on 11/11/11 who named their child Dovahkiin. Young Dovahkiin is almost in high school now, and of the promised free games, their parents have earned a whopping:
- Fallout 4
- Fallout 76
- Starfield
Hope it was worth it.
Same goes to Witcher 1 -> 3 to 3 -> 4 and almost Gta 1 -> 5 to 5 -> 6, and many more franchises. Why is it happening?
Demon Souls - DS3 to DS3 - Elden Ring wasn’t too far off either.
Expectations have gotten higher. If they were still making 2d top down GTA games I don’t think it’d take very long to make a new one. I also don’t think many people would buy them.
Imagine how much more difficult GTA5 was to create compared to GTA1 or 2, it’s the same for every long lived franchise.
People are spoiled for choice so devs have to entice people with something new, making the “same” game with the same graphics every time is a hard sell in today’s market
AAA game development has gotten significantly more costly and time consuming, to the point where it is now basically unsustainable and headed for imminent collapse.
For the Dark Souls example, though, I think it’s important to note that FromSoft still produced Sekiro in between Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring, leaving only a 3-year gap for Elden Ring to come out. Not to mention that the time between Demon Souls to Elden Ring is still less than the time gap between Skyrim and Elder Scrolls 6, so it’s also orders of magnitude of difference.
And we got Armored Core soon after ER. FromSoft still puts out games reasonably often, while still being high quality. Some people may not like every game, but I don’t think anyone can say they’re putting out garbage like some other studios.
That announcement and the “development progress” follow up was fake to placate people getting angry over Failout 76. If they even started to working on it, it was 2023 the soonest.
Pretty sure they said they weren’t going to working it till after Starfield. So it is still in early dev right now.
Timesplitters. Can’t believe that series got left to rot
The first time splitters was one of my favorite games ever. I don’t remember why, but the second one I didn’t like nearly as much.
Smugglers Run - Good premise. I think it could be great with the right modern touches.
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins - I know Sekiro started that way but I’d like a legit sequel with legit developed mechanics/story from the originals.
MTV Music Generator/Music 2000 - I think the multiplayer Jam Mode was ahead of its time, and someone should revisit that aspect in a modern mindset.
Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
Black & White (with VR support).
Shattered Galaxy.
Crystalis.
Deus Ex
