I asked Chat-GPT aboout Elon’s salute, just for fun, and it replied it could not analyse pictures and I needed to describe it to him. I had pictures analysed before, even traslating and explaining a cartoon joke. I tought it could be caused by the .webp format. So I retried the joke image and it worked fine. I uploaded a png of Elon and it went wrong. Can others repeat the experience or was it just a fluke? I am not angry just let down a little.

I think your dad might have been objecting more to your language and tone, than to what you were actually saying. Not that your dad isn’t a tad naive with his taken liberties, but you’d win his ear more if you talked to him with a little bit of mutual respect.

Always keep in mind: this is the guy who fed you when you couldn’t feed yourself

I appreciate what you’re saying but with all due respect, you don’t know me and/or my relationship with my dad. The time for even tone and “mutual respect” was before we were faced with this existential threat and before he decided he was okay with things heading this way and making excuses for Nazi saluting oligarchs at inaugurations on live TV. I have a complicated relationship with my father like many people do. He has influence over my family, and in certain ways, me. I feel very strongly that its important (ethically necessary even) to call out apologism like this in spaces where my voice may be heard. That and I’m extra emotional dealing with the new reality of things. And for what it’s worth that basically is mutual respect, you can’t get an accurate approximation of how he communicates from just a handful of texts.

Fair, just be aware that family ties can sometimes matter more than our ideals.

In my parents country, the left were aligned with the left of the neighbouring country, but differed on the issue of nationalism. That small issue was enough for some of them to distance/execute the left in my parents village, and it was the right-wing fascists in the village (yeah the lunatics wielding guns and causing trouble) who came to their aid.

As you might imagine my family is a mix of extreme communists and fascists, and yet they all sit down with each other for christmas.

I guess what I’m saying is, things might get really crazy out there in the next few years, and when push comes to shove, families generally protect their own, no matter what creed.

That only goes so far… Being a part of ending democracy and the future for everyone including his own descendants doesn’t get a pass just because he raised a kid.

As for the tone, I would guess OP knows their father better than any of us. I certainly wouldn’t speak to my own father like that but maybe that’s their usual style of banter.

If my own child talked to me like that we’d be done texting and the next conversation would be face to face. Very face to face. But, I hope I’d have the self awareness to at least consider they might have a point.

That’s fair. From what I can see in the text, the dad isn’t actually refuting anything the child says, just offering their (bad) POV. I’m not sure if that means he’s open to discussion, but he’s definitely not the aggressor, and to me that’s a sign that he might be reasoned with if you meet his basic level of civility.

You’re right though, I don’t really know their dynamic. Hell, this might be playful dinner banter for all I know

I love this platform. Reasonable conversations with reasonable people. You’ve given me hope, internet stranger. Keep being awesome.
