Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, Proton.
Or do. IDGAF.
Proton has in the past revealed user information to authorities. For instance, Proton previously handed over an IP address at the request of French authorities made via Europol to Swiss police. Yen wrote a Twitter post at the time, stating, “Proton must comply with Swiss law. As soon as a crime is committed, privacy protections can be suspended and we’re required by Swiss law to answer requests from Swiss authorities.”
Well, that’s not wrong, and I will not hold that against them. However, open support for fascists is a huge problem: it supports fascists, plus Proton may support them in other ways behind the scenes. It’s also breaks the trust that are indeed politically neutral - we can no longer be sure that they won’t voluntarily supply the fascist US “government” with data on their perceived opponents, or worse: actively help break encryption (eg by supplying keys that they keep a copy of).
I take Mr. Yen’s point in his tweet but does he not see Trump is all for big business? I highly doubt Trump will do anything about big tech as long as they kneel to him. If they defy him then he’ll maybe do something but considering he wants us to be strong against China he won’t in the end probably.
Mr. Yen did post that tweet 4th of December which (I believe) was before Zuckerberg and the rest of big tech publicly cozied up to Trump. I hope he has changed tack on this view of his (haven’t read his tweets since them so don’t know).
Ultimately I will still continue to use Proton since they have the best track record of any email provider but might reconsider. Unfortunately, there isn’t really another option (as far as I know) other than hosting the email server yourself (which is a ball ache)
