The Blade movies are awesome but I’ve always seen the trilogy as being a different genre for each movie. Blade is a horror movie, Blade 2 is an action movie, and Blade: Trinity is basically a comedy. It’s similar to how Alien is a horror movie, Aliens is an action movie, and Alien3 is a… boring movie. Ha, I only said that last bit to make Alien fans angry.
Anyway, in the first Blade movie, vampires are something to be feared. Just a single vampire is a real threat. Throughout the movie there are scenes with real tension and fear like in any horror movie (especially that opening scene with the blood rave). There are still plenty of daytime scenes and scenes without tension but out of the whole trilogy, this one feels like a vampire horror. Also, Stephen Dorff is awesome.
The second movie is more of an action movie. In this one, no individual vampire is a threat. Not in a “horror movie” sense, anyway. This is the one where they mow down crowds of vampire “reapers” with machine guns. Sure, the reapers are a threat, but we never really fear for the characters’ safety. I mean, Blade and a team of hyper-competent vampire mercs taking on a swarm of vampire mutants? They’ll be fine. Especially with vampire Ron Perlman on their team. And baby-faced Norman Reedus:
Plus Blade 2 was directed by Guillermo del Toro. Awesome.
Blade: Trinity, though, is basically a comedy. This is mostly due to Ryan Reynolds testing out his Deadpool character a decade before he got a chance to play that role. But also, this is the one with wrestler Triple H as a vampire with chrome fangs. And the vampire pomeranian.
This might be the toughest one to re-watch. Actually, there’s no “might” about it. This is the weakest movie in the trilogy.
It’s a shame the Blade trilogy ended where it did. Blade: Trinity could’ve just been an odd misstep in a solid series of movies. If you enjoy Ryan Reynolds being Ryan Reynolds then Blade: Trinity is a fun movie. There aren’t really any stakes (seriously, this Dracula is useless) but there are a lot of fun quips and jokes here. It’s just a shame to end a trilogy of vampire hunter movies on essentially a low-stakes comedy.
But what if there had been a Blade 4? Well, according to wikipedia:
In October 2016, star of the Underworld film series Kate Beckinsale stated that a crossover film between the franchises had been discussed as a sequel to Blade: Trinity with Snipes returning, but was declined because Marvel Studios had plans to introduce the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I’m so mad this never happened. I would’ve loved a Blade/Underworld crossover. I can’t believe we never got that movie and we still don’t have an MCU Blade. Lame.
But, of course…
