The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

I’m new here, and new to federated applications (and fit OP’s description perfectly). This federated stuff is going to remain niche unless somebody figures out a way to make it approachable.

This won’t change unless a maker of a given website creates their own fork of an app as a unique application (this is possible, technically) that streamlines account creation on their own instances with only an “option” to use an out-of-network account.

It would take a big instance making a big gamble, and would probably still need to be sustained with some kind of payment as it would be a pretty large development task.

I do agree it’s a problem, but kind of a unsolvable one without big money and investment.
