I almost forgot that I promised my colleagues I’m going to get them karipap for breakfast.

Good news is, there are lots of karipap.

Bad news, they’re out of karipap sardine 😢

    Stephen King’s “The Shining”

I’m only 40% through, and man it’s such an uncomfortable read at certain parts. His stories have some expected horror stuff, but the most scary horrors are the problems in ourselves.

Alcholism, bad temper, accidentally hurting the child and immediately regretting, regrets for bad life choices, uncertainty in the future, job insecurity…

It’s like many problems you read hits a bit personally because there’s everyone has a bit these problems. And the fear in the reading is not “oh shit a severed head” but it’s a really personal reflection “shit am I like that; will I be like that?”

@unhedged ya, a lot of people speculate (i think he also confirmed a bit), a lot of The Shining was him working out how he could see he was also being a destructive force on his family. I think the fact was picked up by Kubrick, but his rendition of that, King famously hated.

            Why are you tagging imaginelizard?

I’ve read several of King’s newer books and they seem to lack the oomph of his older stories. I wonder if his addiction-pickled brain writes better. Ya bad thought- maybe it’s not correlated to addiction but it’s age related.

@unhedged Alamak, it was auto-tagged on my end (as the creator of the thread). And lol, you’re basically saying conventional wisdom about his output tbh. The sober era one i like most is really his non-fiction On Writing.

Oh I’ll have to get to that. I have the audiobook, but I’ve been avoiding most of his self-narrated books because he’s not that good at reading haha. Not really bad at reading, just that his reading makes me sleepy. Which is very bad because my reading room is actually my car.

Which other fiction writers do you like? For now i’m in a rut of Stephen King and science fiction

@unhedged these days I’m in too much trying to catch up on nonfiction and longreads, so fiction dah lama not read anything current. That I even read King is a surprise because I’m a chicken with horror.

My choices quite common I think: Terry Pratchett for sure, but he’s really a guy whose worldview really became nuanced the longer he went on that it’s almost a crime to say start with the early books in discworld, but they’re good to set the stage and also to see how the world developed (it’s a very loose series so you can really dive in and out). The other one is CS Forester - he does the Horatio Hornblower books and it’s really the worldview of a white British man who came of age before the British empire ended so it can be very rah-rah. But in the 1930s he’s got a good gig writing for Hollywood so his novels really go very fast - the Crichton of his time lol. I want to get into contemporary science fiction but i get really impatient with what they think is important and what i think (lol) but that said, Ted Chiang and his short stories are sooooo berhantu - his high-concept stories always stick in my head.

@dcx @Annoyed_Crabby lol i think because kbin was written as being both link aggregation like Lemmy but also microblogging like Mastodon, Calckey, Akkoma etc. And before Reddit, the expectation must be because the main audience will be bloggers who’ll be visiting from federated spaces (chewah cam star trek). So upvote maps to likes; boosts is reblogs; downvotes go nowhere (since blogging platforms don’t have these).

It’s memang quite interpretative dance la - Calckey (and all the *keys) can give emoji reacts but it just shows up as likes on my Masto fork.

That’s why I thought i better bring it up. It semi looks like Reddit but backend lain sikit.

Anyway… I can see… But idk if adding a photo will add load so here’s the direct link of this comm on kbin.social: https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/77005/c-cafe-daily-chat-thread-for-23-June-2023#entry-comment-342733

@YourClarke hahaha don’t worry. I’ve really only been on Fedi since Nov 22 and kbin at the same time as you guys set up this Lemmy instance. I think the redditors will get the hang of it, certainly faster than Twitterjaya (I’m in perma-eyeroll mode since you guys arrived, because those are my gang. I’m even here cos someone made a big fuss about Elon. Guess where they are at now? Twitter ppl are babies. Mastodon as a platform was at least a few years old and they whined so much. Boo hoo have to pick instance, dunno who to talk to, feed so empty blablabla. But look at you guys! Most of the two major protocols are still held together by string lmao and you make it work.)

The main thing about Fedi protocols is that janji we can roughly talk to each other. Some functionalities across the microblogs pun not shared (I’ve only mentioned a couple), but it’s doable, we make it work. Since joining my to-read tabs blew up and there’s less Main Character discourse. So it’s been a real nice change. But i was missing Malaysia content and community A LOT (hence my eyeroll at Twitterjaya). The current kbin state of things pun (like how when I’m logged on my kbin.social account i can see who upvoted) is probably because of what i explained above but also it’s not even three months old. Lmao the dev is just some Polish kid. Lemmy is much older but a lot of ppl avoided because the main instance and devs are full-on tankies. The Reddit wave made it moot since you can always 1) make your instance; 2) fork the programme if tak puas hati with those devs and maintain your own codebase.

In any case for your example you get Lemmy features when your account is on an instance running Lemmy and kbin when otherwise but not both at the same time. Takpe, it’s not gonna be too hard. And besides monyet.cc is set up, so at least you know how to hang out here. And from here, if you’re signed in as monyet.cc accounts, you absolutely can find other comms such as kbin ones too. Can one can one :)

Btw, about Twitter… All this while, I have only used Reddit je since the past few years. I tried taking a look at Twitter before and well…the Twitterjaya felt so ‘ganas’. I don’t mean the literal violence haha but idk something about their replies and threads screams aggressiveness. And they seemed easy to get angry by things?

Hahaha I’ll just stay in this Lemmy/Reddit pool, apparently.

Oh! Just to add to that though, our stats are probably actually much larger than are reflected on those stats.

          • There’s this thing called the 90-9-1 rule - 90-99% of users lurk. I’ve found this to hold true on r/my and elsewhere.
          • Especially on Lemmy where they have to create an account to even upvote - whereas most lurkers on reddit are probably registered.
          • Lemmy doesn’t seem to report pageview count
          • Someone told me they switched over so they could get their news feed back
          • So I suspect we may have as many as 3-5k daily active users, but just like on reddit, they lurk

If you’re a lurker reading this, please do consider creating an account! There’s no email address required. It’s motivating for us to see higher signup numbers :)

Oh yeah I looked into that.

          • Users-per-month is only the count of users who created lemmy accounts on monyet.cc.
          • Registered users includes users who have visited from federated sites. I’m not sure what triggers the “registration” - I suspect just viewing one of our subs is enough, since we aren’t seeing any major volume of upvotes or subscriptions
          • For our first day we also had a problem with someone running a bot account creation script. I added a captcha and it went away. At some point I’ll probably purge these. (Not sure how many)

You can see the federated users in per-community subscription counts btw, e.g. !cafe is in the 80+ users.

Queueing up to REGISTER to buy Taylor Swift concert tickets. This is just a taste of what’s to come.

The bar is 350 pixels long. In 14 minutes, my progress was 18 minutes. Assuming linear progress on the bar, I expect to do it in…

    350 px / 18px * 14 minutes = 272 minutes = 4.5 hours…

Ok it’s not as bad, the bar progress is non-linear lol. I think i finished the registration by 12.45 or so. So definitely not 4.5 hours.

Maybe the non-linearity is because at noon a bunch of people were all waiting with their index fingers hovering over the mouse button waiting to go. So there was a HUGE surge of traffic at noon, but once that cleared then it went quite smoothly.

If you try to register now the wait is only 30 seconds. So confirmed the wait is because of kiasu people like me.
