WD-40 is actually a very poor lubricant and can gum stuff up. I use sewing machine oil for my appliances since it’s relatively cheap and I figure if its good for my typewriter then it must be good for just about everything else.

Stovetop popcorn is relatively healthy, being somewhat high in fiber for a starchy snack. It’s pretty quick and easy to clean up, if you use a nonstick pot then all it takes is a little soap and a quick scrub and youre done. Super cheap too!

You’re welcome! I would like to emphasise the importance of exfoliating when epilating since it can help prevent ingrown hairs. The truth is that a good scrubbin’ with a washcloth is going to be just as good as some specialized beauty product for most purposes. I forgot to mention that while you should be dry for it it helps to take a shower beforehand to loosen up those follicles. Taking an asprin or something about 30 minutes beforehand makes it more bearable, putting a podcast or something similar on also helps. I’m a fucking nerd who likes to share tips and answer questions so I hope I don’t come off as overbearing or bossy or anything so yeah. Have fun!

you should still shave before using an epi because it works best on hairs that are pretty short. Its a little tricky, because too short and it won’t work, too long and it’ll hurt A LOT. Make sure to exfoliate and moisturize afterwards. You should avoid tight wearing tight clothing on the area that you epilated for a little while, since that may cause irritation.

When everything looks pretty bleak I like to remind myself that in the grand scheme of things, the world really is better off than it was only 200 or so years ago, which is such a small amount of time in terms of the human story.

In that time child labor, (most forms of) child abuse, and the selling of children has gone from widely accepted to largely illegal and widely reviled. These kinds of protections for this vulnerable class of people ultimately stemmed from decreases in mortality for the ages of 0-15 so I see our modern concept of childhood to be a monument to human compassion and progress.

In the past two centuries all sort of liberation movements have sprung up and gained traction all over the world, many of which have rendered real progess and are on the path to accomplish more. More and more people genuinely care about what happens to people in countries on the other side of the planet, the global outpouring of support for the Palestinian liberation movement is a testament to that.

We have the concept of “war crimes” now. Even amidst the horrors of war there are limits to what people can and cannot do to eachother. I think that suggests that “might makes right” is a dying concept and there may come a day (far in the future tbh) where the institution of war may be abolished entirely. (I realize that the concept of human rights and war crime is unevenly applied but the fact that it exists at all says something about our ideals)

Hoping I’m not to late to the party but praises for the humble electric kettle have not been sung here and that must be rectified.

A cheap electric kettle will last you for years and might become the most used appliance in your kitchen, depending on your preferences and habits. In terms of time and energy it is vastly more efficient to boil water in one of these than on a stovetop. It’ll be safer (and more ergonomic) than using a microwave to boil water in an open top container such as a cup or bowl. For physics reasons, microwaving distilled water can cause it to “explode” once disturbed and kettles avoid that problem entirely.

Most people associate kettles with hot drinks and “just add water” prepared foods but any recipe that calls for boiling water can be jumpstarted by using one of these first and then transferring the water into whatever vessel you’re cooking in. Beyond cooking, having quick access to hot water can be useful for things like making mop water, my apartment building has a less than stellar water heater so that may or may not be relevant to you.

Maintenance is pretty simple, keep it empty and unplug it when its not in use. Every once in a while you should descale (delime?) it by filling it up with a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water, let it sit for a couple hours, boil it, pour it out and rinse, depending on how hard your water is you’ll only have to do that once every 3-6 months, it makes a huge difference in time to boil.

Lastly, there’s a lot of these nonsense all-glass ones that seem trendy right now and I would not trust normal glass to stand up to repeated heat stress like that. You should look for one that has a capacity of 1.5 to 2 liters, they’re pretty resistant to wear so secondhand will be just as good as brand new. A lot of the “vintage” ones from the middle of last century are well-built and pretty cute to boot, but whether its new or second hand you’re looking at the equivalent of 20-30 USD for one of these, anything more is just a ripoff.

I went into SIGNALIS totally blind and expected it to turn out to be queerbaiting. That scene after the false ending literally made my jaw drop. Agreed on the anticommunist slant, but atleast its not totally obnoxious and mostly says “people shouldn’t be brutalized by the systems they inhabit” so I elected to reinterpret it as anticapitalist lol.

One little bit about SYNTHETIK: either game is a blast and SYNTHETIK 2 is finally in a state where it is as fleshed out, if not more so than its predecessor. S1 is remarkably lightweight and runs beautifully however S2 has some issues with Proton and I have to periodically restart the program to prevent it from crashing my whole-ass system (Linux Mint). SYNTHETIK 1 has a freeware version called SYNTHETIK: Arena which will let you check out the mechanics to see if you like them, Arena also supports CO-OP play much like the base game! (I really like SYNTHETIK c: )
