If these are our only two options, and we have to pick one, these people are just fine with it? You’re talking about committing genocide regardless of the elected official. If you aren’t severely tempted to say things that would get you put on a list in that situation, then there’s something severely wrong with you.
There’s something deeply suspicious about the kind of person who pulls the lever without hesitating in the original trolley problem. Yeah, it’s the better choice to pull the lever, but people have a natural first aversion to it for a reason. We’re trying to find a way to avoid hurting anyone when we hesitate. And in almost any real life situation minus a fast paced military tactical decision, that’s actually helpful. Taking the first option you see that’s better than the previous option you see no matter what is not good decision making. There’s usually at least three options and you have to analyze them all, not just the first two you observe.
