I’ve been sick of the marketing push about this for months by now. Just let it be over punished-bernie

Libs: the 2 hour toy commercial is based because it recuperates and co-opts feminism

Conservatives: the 2 hour toy commercial is cringe because it hates men

Everyone else: I’mma smoke some weed and go laugh at the 2 hour toy commercial with my friends

Extremely obvious attempt at viral marketing that people have nevertheless fallen for and will continue to fall for when the even more obvious attempt at viral marketing happens again.

I think people have just accepted that they have to participate in viral marketing stuff now because it’s the only way to relate to half their friends, families, and coworkers. Like, did anyone believe for a second all these zoomers were that into Grimmace?

Idk. At a certain point, complaining about this stuff feels on par with the scalds who were angry over jokes about the Titanic Sub.

Yeah, a lot of the shit in the news is a marketing gimmick. But what else is new? Getting worked up because people made Grimace memes for a few weeks after some McDs ad guy spent too much money to force the subject to trend gets us what, exactly?

People like movies. Both these movies appear to be well received. So people are piling on a thing that looks fun.

        Nothing wrong with that.

I enjoyed the Barbie movie for the slop it was I-was-saying

That said, I totally understand and do not blame anyone for being tired of the hype wave and being annoyed at hype in general.

wrong. matinees exist for a reason and, for example the AMC theater by my house does 30% off IMAX and Digital showings from 9am-4pm Monday - Wednesday.

going alone is worth it. there is nothing better than sitting by yourself with a film YOU are interested in seeing and becoming immersed for the next 90-180 minutes in a dark theater. I dunno about you but I certainly don’t have a 20x20m screen and surround system set up anywhere in my apartment - David Lynch was right that you can do yourself a disservice by watching some films on a monitor, tablet, or even a 60" TV.

I do agree that most movies aren’t really worth paying to see when you can just pirate them in 2-3 months - slop like Cocaine Bear or the 3rd reboot of Haunted Mansion don’t need a large screen or surround sound to be enjoyed - but I wouldn’t have wanted to see Dune, Avatar 2, or Asteroid City (just to name a few recent examples) for the first time on my monitor even if it is 4k. I said it in another post the other day - some films are meant to be spectacles and part of the spectacle is seeing it on a huge ass screen and feeling the sound.

This is only enhanced by going alone - especially when you’re sitting in a theater 20 seats across from the only other person attending the showing (literally my Asteroid City experience a few weeks ago at 4pm on a Friday. 10/10 we both enjoyed the movie).

FWIW, I do agree that the theater experience can be expensive if you’re going to non-matinee showings - even I weep at an $18 IMAX ticket price. But I’ve always reasoned that I wind up spending more than that whenever I grab drinks at a bar for an hour or when I go out to eat with someone. shrug-outta-hecks

I hope they keep expanding the Barbie Cinematic Universe (BCU) and it completely takes over and it’s just Barbie movies and shows and fandom everywhere for a decade

Nolan stans here already tried to defend the latest BWAAAAAAAAAAAAM but I feel vindicated that it’s been identified as yet more reactionary shit from a reactionary shithead. sicko-yes

A 2 hour toy commercial about an Aryan children’s toy with blonde hair and blue eyes that was created to give little girls body dysmorphia so they would grow up to be obedient housewives

        versus

a movie about a famous scientist with friends in the CPUSA who gave money to leftist causes and helped defeat fascism and was suspected of communist sympathies himself.

But Chris Nolan made the second one so it’s reactionary. Forget about death of the author

You’re blissfully ignoring the Nolan spin on the story. It isn’t some magically nonpolitical presentation; it is yet another Nolan spin, this time on Oppenheimer, complete with anticommunist bullshit mixed in which downright warps the biographical story. Clearly you’re stanning for Nolan movies and made an entire alt account just to reactively rage at me to defend the good name of your favorite cryptofascist movie treat man, so I don’t know what else to tell you except better get your next alt account made soon, you silly superfan. sus-soviet

Forget about death of the author

Yes, I rather would because it’s used by reddit-logo types like yourself as a thought terminating cliche to excuse your own failures of literary comprehension.

EDIT: I may have been mistaken about how this particular Nolan film plays out compared to all the ones I saw before and disliked for similar reasons, and I am willing to believe the testimony of one person replying who explained how the film plays out. That’s nice, and I’m glad. On the other hand, the standard issue frothingfash toxic fan that showed up in the below comment chain (and made another alt account specifically to go frothingfash at me as of only ~30 minutes ago) reinforces why I like to steer clear of Nolan movies and especially their fandoms in general.

There’s a scene where a middle schooler virtually quotes this to Barbies face and calls her a fascist which makes her cry
