In short:

Surfers say they feared they were about to “witness something pretty horrible” as the door from a plane fell towards South Broulee Beach last week.

The door landed in coastal scrub 20 metres from a fisherman, with the pilot telling airport staff its “latch was not secured properly”.

What’s next?

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau says it will not conduct an investigation as it would be “unlikely to yield any new safety lessons”.

Just don’t fly on these small planes and you’ll be fine. It’s always the small planes…

The door came from a privately owned American RV-10 four-seater plane and the pilot and passenger landed safely after the incident.

Eurobodalla Shire Council told the ABC in a statement that the pilot told airport staff “the door latch was not secured properly”.

I used to be pretty fearful of flying but then I worked in an airport and saw how many people fly every single day without even a minor issue. That really normalised it for me (not that I fly often).

i’ve flown my entire life. it’s the parking, baggage limits, baggage fees, TSA bullshit, being surrounded by entitled tourists and their screaming shitlings in a tiny disgusting seat, layovers, delays, canceled flights, baggage claims, lost baggage, and yes–doors flying off of not-small planes that factored into my decision. fuck literally everything about flying. i don’t know how much money it would take to make me ever deal with any of it ever again, but it would be a hell of a lot

I enjoy being “randomly” selected for further screening for five flights in series and having my balls fondled in public.

I think spending so much time in airports has desensitised me to most of that stuff, though it has taken the excitement out of airports and flight travel too. It’s just like being in a shopping mall or on a bus to me now. I will say the one bit I still hate are those long international flights where I can go to sleep, wake up and still be in the air. Something about that always unsettles me.
