I took a random call without an ID and all I heard over the phone was some abstract sounds that sounded like a children’s playroom, I just asked “what the hell” once it quieted down and then it crescendoed into frenzied laughter(?) before hanging up???

I remember listening to a podcast YEARS ago where this person was asking for an explanation about something similar, just bizarre experiences picking up the phone with no one on the other end actually responding. The conclusion was that it was some kind of money making racket where someone who owns some telephone infrastructure is able to make money by keeping people on the line after they pick up the call in some convoluted way, and the really weird audio shit just likely worked better at keeping people from disconnecting too early.
So maybe that? Or some spooky shit is about to go down who knows.
Yes but not quite. That silence is a by-product of these robo-dialing systems that scammers and scummier telemarketers use that are constantly auto-dialing people. They’re dialing people even when there currently aren’t any reps available. So what’s going on is, the system has connected you to the switchboard but is waiting for a rep to get off a call and then patch them to you on the switchboard. Until that happens, it gives you silence.
In the podcast I was talking about this person would pick up the phone and then it wouldn’t be silence, just weird audio, sometimes a crowd of people, sometimes just machinery noises, just weird shit.
The weird noises could be coming from those scammers if there’s some sort of bleed or glitch. I always assumed that if there’s distant crowd noise it means it connected while the rep had their headset down.

Eep. Would have freaked me out too. I’ve also received inexplicable missed call recordings that kind of start off muffled (phone in jacket, bag etc ) but then become clearer as the person finds the phone, then ends the call. I thought that could explain the ‘crescendo’ of the laughter becoming louder. But if it’s inorganic, I’m hoping it could be a prank as others here have said
