Reddit moderators doing a 31 billion dollar corporation’s bitch work for free.

      for free

I absolutely assure you that Reddit is getting paid for this shit. Spez doesn’t lift a finger without a string attached.

they’re protecting the interests of people who make more money in a single year than they’ll make in their entire lifetime

They’re the loyal dogs of the corporate elite because they get the scraps thrown from the table. And when you’ve got a $25T table, those are some very nice scraps.

Ehh, more like were are all hanging out at a local bar and the owner all of a sudden got a case of assholeism. Started going fucking nuts, screwing with food/drink quality and availability, started fucking over the servers and bartenders. We hate him and want all the good people to get out and the place to burn to the ground.

Yea but in reality that bar is continuing to thrive and the vast majority of the patrons don’t care and are largely unaffected by the owner. We opened a new bar down the road and instead of focusing on making it a cool new place to hang out it’s just a bunch of bitching about the old bar.

It’s not that simple. People want to participate where communities are, some are still largely on reddit. There’s also the free labor active submitters do regarding submissions, and they decide on what platform they participate in.

People want to participate where communities are, some are still largely on reddit.

So much of the community atmosphere of the site has been undercut and replaced by automated accounts that generate content from historical human conversations. Like, straight up, whole content threads get lifted and shifted between posts to create the illusion of participation. If you’ve been on the site for a while, its downright surreal.

Between that and the militant banning of anyone who isn’t an empty-headed twit or a reflexive cheerleader, there’s very little human activity left on the site to speak of. You’re not in a community, you’re in a graveyard. Most of the people you’re talking to are digital ghosts.

There’s also the free labor active submitters do regarding submissions

Less and less by year. Again, it can’t be stressed how much of Reddit is entirely automated. A handful of accounts, often directly or indirectly managed by the source of the content, are doing the lion’s share of the posting and commenting. Real human interaction is being minimalized. Reddit’s real money isn’t in posters anymore, its in lurkers. You’re supposed to look, not touch.

It’s not weird or particularly unhealthy to look back at the person you were close to, but betrayed you, and realize that all of your interactions with them were actually them being an asshole, and the people who still support them are assholes too. Nor is it particularly unhealthy to have a bit of schadenfreude about the suffering of those who chose the asshole over you, while hopefully still having some sympathy and hope that they escape.

It’s how I feel about Taylor swift fans, at least.

Not to be rude or anything, but it sounds like you’ve got an unhealthy relationship with social media. I still use reddit for the subreddits I’m interested in, I don’t read other subreddits anymore just because the content is bad. Like I don’t care about what reddit does or what Lemmy does, if I don’t enjoy it, I’ll leave, it’s that simple.

You don’t have to commit to anything, you are also allowed to enjoy the communities of reddit, even if you feel like Reddit did you wrong. It’s not worth spending your energy on something you can’t control. Reddit is shit, that is the only reason why I only check in once a week or something, and to be frank those communities are dying if they aren’t already dead.

For me it’s only about if I enjoy it and that includes how it’s being run. But anyways things tend to become bad when they grow large, I will probably spend less time with Lemmy when it has become bigger. And then I’ll have find another social media platform.

Ok, but there’s also post from 4chan, Xitter, Facebook, and everywhere else on the internet. Reddit, and now Lemmy, grab information and memes from literally everywhere so you don’t have to.

There’s always going to be a subject someone doesn’t care for. Thankfully though, there’s filters in most every app now. The ones further along in their Lemmy journey tend to use them instead of complaining about having to see things repeatedly.

Most of the posts about Reddit are on the dedicated community.

They get usually downvoted to oblivion anywhere else, you’re not the only one feeling that way.

There is a community here (won’t say the name to avoid brigading) where people moved from Reddit after their sub got banned.

The topic? Discussing about an influencer’s lifestyle.

Not really the most tech-aware crowd, still they were able to get through this. It’s been almost a year now I think, and they are still using their community on Lemmy. Just to show that the entry barrier is not that high.

they didn’t even require an email

That’s a good point, curious how they handled the bots and fake accounts over time. Maybe we could have email requirement removed once we have enough tools to detect those.

It might help your frustration levels to know that sign up time isn’t an issue. It’s just an excuse. I’ve had to on several occasions forcibly manipulate individuals with fomo just to get them to install an app on their phone. The total process from opening the app store to being part of the group was like 2 minutes long, they just didn’t want to. You cant reason with these people, you can only make your option more fun.

That’s the problem with federated platforms is that sign up is often confusing.

However you can go to a large instance like lemmy.world. sign up is literally just as easy as creating an account on any other site. At which point you don’t need to sign up for other instances unless you really want to or if they are defederated, as long as the instance you created the account on is federated with the instance you want to interact with you can comment there with your account from the other instance.

            • federated: Describes a system that works like email. Users join servers, which talk to other servers and allow their users to talk to each other.

It has NEVER been a real place.

I was there from day zero… to give some context I mailed spez his own source code when his server was misconfigured for VERBOSE error reporting. This was when he was trying to program a user registration system.

The very first conversations had on Reddit, and I’m including myself in this, were all squabbling about useless horseshit.

Reddit has always been a shitshow. Bacon, narwhals, and so forth to convince people that there’s some kind of community there, when there is not and never has been.

As much as I want to say that Reddit’s rules against glorifying violence are cut & dry, I cannot blame anyone who sympathizes with Luigi Mangione especially when the system is outright crooked. I get the frustration when nearly every Reddit post about Luigi ends up getting locked because the mods are either overwhelmed with or are too fucking lazy to moderate comments (I theorize the latter.) Brian Thompson has been responsible for far more deaths due to him employing AI algorithms that have trebled UnitedHealthcare’s rejection of insurance claims, but the difference is that the American people are expected to put up and shut up with his antics. You can’t vote with your wallet because good luck suing a corporation that brings in twelve figures of annual revenues for a wrongly-denied claim. Nor can you literally vote with your ballot paper because both the Democrats and Republicans are corporate bootlickers that have enabled widespread anti-consumer behaviour in the first place.

Not saying that Brian deserved what he got, but these are the actions of someone who had been brought to the end of their tether by the health insurance system.

Things can go either way for Luigi. He faces the very real possibility of jury nullification, but also, maybe the justice system is going to mess with the legal process so much that he’s gonna end up going through what is effectively a kangaroo court.

On the subject of Reddit, throwing Ellen Pao under the bus and bringing back that Tintin-looking cuck as CEO is probably the worst thing Reddit’s board has done. Spez has been nothing but poison for the site.

No one ever questions why hospitals and such charge so much like $100 for a Tylenol. Are people surprised that insurance companies push back against those kinds of charges? Then you have drug companies that charge $1000/month for a drug in the US and $100/month in another country and lots of fraudulent claims.
