Funny thing about face masks is that they work like a psychological tool as well. The person wearing it is more self conscious because they have something over their mouth. The people who see them with a mask on also become aware and avoid them either because they think it’s weird or think there’s something wrong.

It might not be N95 but the fact it separated people and kept them from directly and opening breathing in potential open air pathogens does make a difference.

Which is why at one point in the height of the pandemic, medical people had to admit that anything over your mouth was better than nothing.

Even if it is an over priced designer mouth gear

I mean sure but if your paying the price they wanted you expect it to be certified to work at the modern level that is the standard. Working as well as a cowboy bandana is not ok. Also the reason they said anything was not about behavior its because of math. n95 is as it sounds preventing 95% from passing in/out and the amount encountered is based on distance due to spread. Having anything over you mouth might just drop it by 90% or even 60% if it totally sucks balls but it does not take much to reduce sneezes and coughs by at least 50%. So if someone with covid kisses you full on the mouth you are not guaranteed to get it but you might as well be while talking at normal convo distance will reduce it to a coin flip and 10 feet outdoors make it so unlikely we deem it as safe. you add a mask and it reduces the chances by its effectiveness so now that person tonguing your mask may just get you sick but the convo distance might as well be 10 feet outside if its an n95.
