I was a sophomore in high school when it happened. I live in the area and know people that lost siblings who had children that couldn’t understand why their father didn’t come home. Had multiple of my own siblings in the city that we couldn’t get in contact with for a long time and one that had lunch plans at the towers. Had a friend of a relative lose both his parents on one of the planes. One of my previous bosses worked in the towers and got out after the first plane hit. He lost friends. This was a real event that hurt a lot of people. I still can chuckle at the memes slightly, but it’s weird that there are people who are in there 20’s and don’t take it seriously at all.
I feel you. It’s human nature that issues that affect you directly are not as easy to laugh at. But, to be fair, we laugh at all sorts of things that are just as serious but further back in time. If this was a meme about Pearl Harbor it wouldn’t make people cringe. Personally I think enough time has passed to joke about 9/11, but I do empathize with your experience.
Pearl Harbor happened 82 years ago. That’s almost a lifetime. If you read up on that, it’s also pretty messed up to joke about. Been there. It’s pretty significant/solemn. On the USS Arizona alone over 1,100 people died. They did not pull the bodies from the wreck and built a memorial on top of it. I really wouldn’t joke about that one either.
9/11 happened in many people’s lifetimes and people still live with the damage. My brother in-law saw the first plane hit in person and has that memory seared into his head. I saw the coverage of people jumping to their deaths because they didn’t want to burn to death. I’d highly recommend the movie Reign Over Me. It’s probably the best things Adam Sandler ever did.
The same people that make fun of 9/11 want people to support Palestinians. It’s a strange dichotomy.
