If this is the future of automobiles then I’m going to go to mad max levels of psychotic to keep my old dumb car running.

The biggest thing I hate is that it is impossible to fix. A software bug can brick your infotainment system, and there’s no way to swap it out with a new one without extensive reverse engineering.

I’d be fine with smart cars if they were legally required to publish all of the APIs and interfaces so that after market infotainment can exist. Basically we need a standard like OBD, but for the car’s control system that the infotainment plugs in to.

Like imagine if the 2038 bug bricks your head unit. Your car, that still runs, is now basically unusable due to how reliant the car was on that screen. You can drive it, but now you won’t even be able to change the temperature, and there’s no aftermarket to fix it with.

Closed source smart vehicles basically turn your 3,000lb chunk of material into a disposable commodity.

Ok but how about a dumbass hatchback subcompact that runs on electricity. I’m sick and tired of “smartphone on wheels” give me car play and it’s all the smartphone I need. I’m perfectly happy keeping all that shit on my phone and having the car be for transportation

then how would they spy on you and steal your data? i’m afraid your best option is to convert a dumb car into electric

Seriously I wonder how expensive it would be to do that to my fit. And while I’m at it I could replace my frustrating Honda infotainment system with the one that actually works and nobody needs to upgrade upon because all anyone wanted was their phone to display there.

Like, I don’t even know how we wound up in a position where “my car tracks my sex life” is both normal and unavoidable and nobody is stopping it

last i checked there are companies that convert old cars to electric for a minimum of 10k, but the motor has like 20 hp and range is less than 100 km. i bet you can get decent specs for 20k.

There’s a german company that does that for 12 to 15k, with range of around 250km

its looking more and more ill just have to opt out of cars

i hope people blame EVs for the eventual problems this and similar shenanigans will cause and we just stop using cars altogether.

Not Tencent, but ever since Verizon sold it to Apollo in 2021 the quality of the content started going down.
