Update 1/16 - Adblock has informed BleepingComputer that its engineers fixed the problem and released ABP 3.22.1 and AB 5.17.1 on the Opera and Edge extension stores. The same versions are currently in review on the Mozilla and Chrome add-on stores, and should be made available soon.

          Outages may only affect you if you’re syncing a new device or making a write (adding or editing an entry), otherwise your entire vault is available locally.

          And that’s not even a limitation at all, it’s a trade-off. The convenience of syncing devices beats the crap of keepass* solutions for most. And even as a syncthing user, I would absolutely hate having to manage vault sync conflicts myself.

            I don’t know if they changed something recently, but when there was an outage a few months ago, you couldn’t even open the app nor use the extension https://old.reddit.com/r/Bitwarden/comments/14yk2ax/bitwarden_down_this_morning/

            No, that’s a limitation AND a trade-off. The stupidity of trusting a third-party cloud provider to manage something as important as all of your fricking passwords is mind-blowing. It’s as if you people haven’t learnt anything at all from LastPass.

            I’m a Syncthing user myself and NEVER had a sync conflict syncing my Keepass db across a dozen devices - not even once.

              LastPass had a list of concerning design choices, using cloud is not one of them. Your personal preference here is irrelevant.

              It’s really not. You can’t expect the average user to set up yet another service to sync their devices in a way that is conflict-free and available at all times for writes. Sooner or later a write will be lost. It’s very much a trade-off between partition tolerance (synchronization of multiple devices), consistency, and availability - see the CAP theorem.

              Bitwarden maintains consistency by refusing writes when the server is unreachable. Keepass just delegates partitioning to another service entirely (e.g. Syncthing), which opens the possibility of losing edits.

                Considering the breaches lastpass had in just the last year, using their cloud service is absolutely a concerning choice. how they got breached is especially egregious.

      Does ublock origin even work with chrome on YouTube anymore? I switched to Firefox a couple months ago because, even after updating ublock origin, YouTube still detected that I was using an ad blocker and refused to show me content.

    YouTube causes the performance hit. Not the ad blockers. If ads weren’t creating such big performance hits by themselves, folks wouldn’t all need to use ad blockers.

    Until Youtube no longer loads period with an ad blocker people will still use them and even then people will find back doors to prevent the firehose of ads Google wants to subject you to. They wanted a monopoly and now they are big mad they have to deal with the consequences of that decision

      I don’t know why anyone even uses the YouTube app. Newpipe has always worked for me and I’ve never seen an ad once and always can watch in whatever resolution I want.

        Yeah newpipe is so good its not even close. Play in the background feature with custom playlists without needing an account is just the best.

      iPhone users don’t have the option of a convenient app, though I understand brave browser can work. Either way android users have an easier time blocking ads then Iphone users. I pay for YouTube family so my kids and the TV can avoid ads.

        I dont know much about this topic, I just seem to recall a post on the front page of my lemmy app a while ago saying to NEVER use brave as it was a scam. Is there truth to this?

          I don’t think it was a scam as such. I think people didn’t really understand their model. I haven’t stayed informed on it though so maybe there is more to know.

          Depends on why they were saying it was a scam. It’s functional as a browser, so not a scam on the most basic level. It hasn’t always been as privacy-supporting as it claims (somewhere between Chrome and Firefox if all are carefully configured, it seems). Brave also has a dubious crypto rewards scheme baked in.

        Yeah, it could be. I host my own instance of Piped, and it feels like pretty much the same experience as if I were browsing YT directly.

      That’s a bold statement since they own the stream we’re watching from

      If they embed the ads, and block things like sponsoblock from working, it’ll get pretty hard to filter them.

      I pay for premium, but I watch a LOT of YT and listen to a lot YT music so I don’t mind paying ATM.

        Embedding ads into the stream would be hard to counter, but it’s far away. That would invalidate caches along the way and need extra performance to reencode the stream with the ads inserted.

        That’s extra costs that are hopefully orders of magnitude above the lost ad revenue from ad blockers

          Ya, but it’s hard to use logic for a company that realistically has too much money and power if they decide they want to ‘win’ against ad-blockers.

          That said, I do use adblock(Ublock Origin), Sponsorblock, and I even have / use pihole in the house, and I guess being a ‘premium’ subscriber overrides their messing with ad blockers. With my TV(nvidia shield) or Browser (Firefox) I do not get any delays / problems. So at least that’s good for now.

            To a certain degree, yes. If someone at Google decides to wage all-out war against ad blockers they have a good chance. But if that costs more money than it generates, odds are that someone will stop it. Google / Alphabet is publicly traded after all and that means profit above all else.

          I mean, perhaps, but it the infrastructure, creators and user base are pretty big hurdles to overcome. I keep my head up watching Odyssey, peertube etc… but they seem mostly fringe creators so far.

          Competition is good no doubt

    I can attest it is very weird. The entire browser slows down on transition to full screen (lags like your machine has a virus or something) and introduces a buffer wheel of lag after the first 10 or so seconds of every video.
