Daily reminder that there are free and open-source alternatives to Photoshop and the likes which should do most of the things you need it to.
I know Photoshop has a few features people can’t live without for work reasons or what not so these aren’t replacements for everyone, but if you’re just doing some light digital art or image editing as a hobby or as something to pass time, these should be a good enough replacement given that you’re alright with learning a new piece of software.
God i hate GIMP’s UI. Luckily Photopea exists now and has I think every Photoshop feature. Noteably the incredibly necessary (for me) pen tool is there.
Krita is good to know about though for when I need to do charachter sketches for my artist partner to turn legot.
GIMP 3.0 is coming this year and hopefully it will move things around 🫑🫑🫑🫑🫑
I got used to GIMP in school since me and my friend would fuck around with it so much and we didn’t know about pirating photoshop or whatever. I feel like I have so much control but I’m sure every editing software feels like that when you grasp the basics. The only things I struggle with is how many options you think would be in blur or animation or whatever are hidden deep within menu trees you wouldn’t think to look
My main thing is that i cannot undersell how necessary the pen tool is for what i use photo editing for. I know paint.net doesnt have it. And if GIMP does i cant find it. So im using photopea or photoshop.
Color replacement us a little easier in paint.net so i use it for that. GIMP is just so unituitive and my brain is smooth as a pearl.
Luckily Photopea exists now
Yoooooooooooooooooo this is so good thank you for mentioning it.
Latest beta of GIMP has incredible UI.
Stable release probably around Q2 2024.
It lacks a useful raw editor
I spent like a hour trying to do some pretty simple stuff with GIMP the last time I gave it a go and it really put me off learning it.
Kolourpaint is pretty good if you just want something quick like mspaint
Also, Darktable for any of my fellow photographers.
Software piracy is always ethical
I could imagine Adobe releasing a pirated version of Adobe Creative Suite softwares that have this setting always on regardless of opt-out
That’s why I also firewall my pirated copy of photoshop.
the wealth of “free” training data for LLMs is now drying up so the “market” is now going to solve their problem.
Generating 1 billion PDF files of random characters and opening them all in Adobe Reader, as a bit
Someone should find the API this uses to phone home and send gigabytes of garbage to it lol
Wouldn’t repeated patterns of gibberish be worse for machine learning than just sheer randomness? I have absolutely no knowledge about machine learning but I’m imagining it learns from patterns and largely ignores randomness because it simply can’t parse that.
Since all A.I. shall be Naizfied, it is always acceptable to poison the data pool.
Use Disney characters so the shit the AI generates will result in lawsuits.
Pirate that shit.
I refuse to subscribe to a software to some corpo dev team that would pull this shit.
I should probably not keep drafts of my writing in Google Docs, huh?
Nope
Google does the exact same shit
Does Microsoft? And if so, is there an opt out?
It would be enormously inconvenient for me to switch from Word to LibreOffice x_x. I am disgustingly plugged in to their cloud ugh.
I understand this isn’t a solution, but if you’re willing to pay a bit you could set up a Nextcloud server, capable of hosting some office suite online with Docs-like simultaneous editing (don’t remember the name of the software). You can also host it on an extra computer if you have one lying around
I hope not but I’d also like to know.

Some dude at adobe looking at my pregnant Sonic fan art:
despicable
I’ve known about this for a while so I’ve had mine off since i heard about it last year.
also they added AI widget makers to Illustrator and possibly photoshop. It sucks
Their “AI” shit is just their “Smart” tools rebranded and it annoys me. Like, the Smart Clone was a cool tool, and their Content Aware stuff was fun, but calling it AI is annoying.
Yeah, I watched some videos of people demonstrating/testing/reviewing Photoshop “AI” tools. Many of them really were the same tools Photoshop has had for years already, just rebranded as AI. Such a blatant cash grab.

Imagine not just pirating adobe products lol
use mupdf
Alternately, leave it enabled and use Nightshade/Glaze to poison all your images.
I saw a post of someone testing out nightshade to see what it even does, and apparently it leaves extremely visible distortions on the image that look like a cross between jpeg artifacts and an ocular migraine.
My understanding is that it depends heavily on the structure of the image you’re using it on, as well as the intensity with which you’re applying it. I haven’t played around with it myself, though. Bummer if it’s not possible to use it without it changing the image significantly.
This shit is why I pirate old ass Adobe 11 with everything adobe blocked in/out on my firewall settings.
