I reported them for harassment with the following statement:

The purpose of this group is to review bomb any game that has gay representation. Their discussion threads talk about using other platforms to discriminate against LGBTQ+ communities and individuals to circumvent Steam’s TOS policies. This type of behavior promotes discrimination, review brigading, and toxicity. It is surprising Steam is tolerating such open homophobia on this platform.

At risk of sounding like a bootlicker, I have to at least give credit to Steam for making an explicit exemption for trans people changing their account login names from our deadnames. Typically there’s no way to change your login name, and it seems like there’s probably some fucked up old spaghetti code to blame. But steam support lets you change it specifically if it is your deadname, and it seems like they go out of their way to accommodate us to do that. From what it sounds like when I talked to steam support, as a software developer my self, it sounds like a convoluted manual process that they go through solely to make trans people’s lives a little better. They even ask us specifically not to widely share that they are willing to do this, presumably so cis people don’t take advantage of it and ruin it for the rest of us. So good for them, honestly.

Yeah, given their actions during the George Floyd protests this is par for the course. For those not aware, some of the employees wanted the company to make a statement and donate money to appropriate charities. Others were tech-chud libertarians who of course wanted to do nothing or outright condemn the movement. The solution the higher-ups came to was to just give every employee several thousand dollars to do with as they saw fit. Want to donate to bail funds? That’s just fine! Don’t want to donate at all? That’s okay too! Would rather just give it to atomwaffen? Go right ahead, just don’t make us pick a side!

Gamergate honestly catapulted the whole thing but I’ll keep saying it: I vividly remember everyone gettin mad as fuck about LoZ: Wind Waker because it wasn’t Ocarina of Time: More tits and gore and I genuinely think the whole thing has its root causes in gaming starting as a hobby for rich people originally

It wasn’t until I saw my first queer slice of life anime Yuri On Ice in my late 30s that made me realize how developmentally harmed I was not seeing representation in like normal realtionships. Seeing a queer romance blossom in a healthy manner just clicked.

tails-what “I understand why mom watches and gets so involved in those soap operas now.”

Then LUCA - still makes me gay aww tear up. Just in animation, story telling - the lack of it growing up hurt me developmentally. Lack of visibility and acceptance.

These frothingfash know it and know exactly what they are doing harming queer people, but especially queer youth. They don’t want them to be healthy functional queer adults. If they had their way they’d slap open season on us.

    overtly anti-free speech messaging

I can guarantee you that these kinds of people would lose their shit if people “cancelled” a game developer that released a pro-fascist game.

Steam famously doesn’t have strict content guidelines. They don’t really remove anything from their marketplace (you can find unfettered racism and mass shooting simulators easily). Valve is very hands off when it comes to moderation, community, third games in a series or really anything.

Let them. Their just outting themselves as a bigot while promoting games. If anything follow them and thank them for promoting lgbtq friendly games if you want them to stop.

This is fine but they often flood the community board with bigoted content and those aren’t removed by Valve either, and they show up on everyone’s dashboard depending on configuration.

Unfortunately they don’t. I think after the Hatred game debacle, they released new policies saying people can post whatever they want as long as it’s genuine and not trolling, but I think this applies to games only. As for everything else, the company is extremely libertarian and hands off with leadership, development, and moderation. You can find hundreds of neo nazi grooming steam groups, and one of them was in the news a few years back for being where two canadian neo nazi murderers met

If you let them in you drive away the people they’re hateful towards. Eventually they take over the community. The only way to stop that is to nip it in the bud.

personally i’m with you lemmy.ml person, I think using their reviews to find the hottest and gayest games and thanking them for consuming all this queer content like they’ve done a service to the gay community is a p. funny route which would probably make them quite mad

not sure why all the hexbears only focused on “let them [be a bigot]” here especially when it sounds like Valve isn’t going to ban them so something like this is really the only practical recourse available other than stewing over the fact that this person should be thrown into a pit
